The St Petersburg Blagovest Ensemble

Finally the waiting is over… after much too long an absence from our shores, the Blagovest Choral Ensemble of St Petersburg, once again led by Olga Kozlova, is returning for a 2010 tour in September …the Russians are coming!!

Based at the St Petersburg Conservatoire – the centre of traditional Russian choral music - the Blagovest Ensemble is noted for its musicians’ high professionalism and their unashamed passion for the music they love to share. Their concert repertoire includes pearls of Russian choral a cappella music, both spiritual and secular.

Russian choral music, with its distinctive melodic patterns, holds a unique place in the musical culture of the world - due in no small measure to the Russian Orthodox Church, which allows only the sound of the human voice to praise God in worship and whose choral tradition goes back a thousand years. Even a small ensemble allows an audience to feel the dramatic and melodic wealth which characterises this music. It fascinates with its beauty and strength and leaves nobody indifferent.

Censored in Soviet Russia for almost 70 years, it is only in recent years that the masterpieces of Russian choral spiritual music have sounded again, thanks to the work of professional musicians like Blagovest, who are devoted to this wonderful genre. Today this music is experiencing a second birth, allowing us all to re-open forgotten pages of world culture.

October

Harvest Festival

Our Harvest celebrations begin on Friday 1st October with the Harvest Supper at Mobberley Cricket Club.  As usual we shall be holding a quiz night with party games and enjoy a traditional Harvest hotpot.  Tickets cost £10 for adults and £5 for children.

The Church will be open for visitors on Saturday 2nd October between 10 - 4 and refreshments will be available all day.  The church will be decorated for Harvest to our usual high standard.  Today is also Gift Day in which everyone is invited to make a Thank Offering for the life of the Church.

This year we shall be holding a new event which is our Charity Golf Day.  This is open to everyone, experts and novices alike and to level the playing field that is where we shall be playing, on specially prepared fields around the church.  Contact us for more information.

Our Harvest celebrations climax on Sunday 3rd October with our services of Harvest Thanksgiving at 10 a.m. and Harvest Songs of Praise at 6.30 p.m.  This latter service has grown in popularity over the last couple of years and is a collection of favourite harvest and creation hymns and readings, both bibllcal and otherwise, on the subject of harvest and autumn.

Patronal Festival

On the second Sunday of October we celebrate the Feast Day of our patron saints, Wilfrid of Ripon.  Wilfrid was an important figure in the life of the early Church in this country particularly at the point where the Church was moving from a Celtic to a Roman model of church structure.

At our special All-Age Patronal Festival service we are joined by children from Mobberley Primary School, which for many years was also known as St. Wilfrid's School, who enact the story of the life of St. Wilfrid.
